University Announcement: Chinese New Year Greetings from Council Chairman

Chinese New Year Greetings from Council Chairman

Dear Council and Court members, colleagues, students, alumni,

Happy Chinese New Year!

As the saying goes, “At the beginning of the year, everything will make a fresh start”. The recent achievements of the University showcasing the strength and ability of our staff, students and alumni added extra joy to us in this festive occasion. I am glad that the University continues to achieve impressive results in various aspects and made a further leap to be placed at 55th world-wide and at 7th in Asia, according to the 2016 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings; the commendable quality of our graduates led CityU to become one of the four local universities ranked among the top 150 for the third consecutive year in the Global University Employability Ranking 2016 published by Times Higher Education; and the outstanding performances of our faculty, students and graduates have earned them prestigious awards in manifold fields, particularly in sports, arts as well as research.

More than that, CityU has been making good progress in nurturing and developing the talents of students and creating applicable knowledge in order to support social and economic advancement. A number of successful problem-driven, interdisciplinary research projects were developed on campus last year which hold great promise in various aspects such as aerospace industry, medical application and environmental protection, all sharing the same objective to make a difference to society by improving the quality of life for all. The Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme commencing in the academic year of 2017/18 also reflects the pioneering spirit that runs through the University and paves a great way for the University to strengthening its ties with the local community by directly serving its needs.

As the University’s periodic updates reported, follow-ups on the Sports Hall Incident are almost completed and most of the facilities are re-opened, and a proposal for re-construction of a new building on the site based on the external consultant studies has been shared with the University community. All the above tell us the readiness of CityU to further excel in both academic research and professional education. The University could not achieve that much without the efforts and support of all of you. My sincere thanks go to every member of the University. With your continued support and concerted efforts, I am confident that the University will continue to reach new heights of excellence under the leadership of Professor Way Kuo and his management team.

Wishing you all a wonderful Year of the Rooster blessed with health, joy and fulfillment.

Herman Hu
Chairman of the Council
