Dear alumni,

Our vision as an international university emphasises the mutual enrichment of different cultures and intellectual traditions. The latest exhibition at the CityU Exhibition Gallery exemplifies this commitment. The “Art Deco. The France-China Connection” exhibition traces the origins of Art Deco in France and its influence over France and China. It showcases more than 300 precious artefacts including furniture, sculptures, paintings, posters, costumes, jewellery, and many others, from museums, institutions and private collectors in France, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Please visit this unique exhibition! It runs until 30 June at 18/F, Lau Ming Wai Academic Building.

CityU has a strong connection with France and its culture. Some of the most famous academics, including Nobel Laureates, Fields Medalists, and heads of major research institutions in France, have delivered distinguished lectures on campus and four French scholars are currently Senior Fellows of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study at CityU. I am humbled to have been recently bestowed the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’ Honneur. The award is indicative of the close relationship between CityU and France in many areas of research and collaboration

To celebrate our spirit of unity, Council Chairman Mr Lester Huang and I made glutinous rice balls for guests at the Spring Reception for the CityU Foundation on 8 March. This was a great way to say a big “Thank You” to Foundation members for all their support and extend good wishes for our future development.

It is our mission to promote research that makes a real difference to people’s lives. A joint laboratory on neutron scattering recently established by CityU and the Institute of High Energy Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the only laboratory in Hong Kong for research into this discipline. It has great potential to enhance the city’s role in developing science and technology in the Greater Bay Area.

The unity and energy of the CityU community came together again for Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon. Over 1,100 CityU alumni, students and staff ran the races on 17 February. Several CityU runners achieved their personal bests. Alumna Ms Lui Wai-man won the second runner-up in the 10-kilometre Woman’s Overall Challenge in 37 minutes 52 seconds! Meanwhile, as a way to promote greater social inclusion, CityU runners accompanied students from four special schools running the 10K event.

Please note the 6th Distinguished Alumni Award is open for nominations. This biennial award recognises alumni who have significantly impacted their profession and who have contributed their services to CityU and society at large. Your nominations and support are much appreciated.

Spring is the season for vibrancy and growth. May the months ahead bring you abundance and fulfillment!
