Dear alumni,

As we approach the end of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your staunch support in 2018.

To express our gratitude to members of the CityU Foundation and friends of the University for their contributions, and to showcase the University’s commitment to the pursuit of innovation and academic excellence, the Foundation Annual Dinner was held on Thanksgiving Day last month. Over 500 guests, including many alumni, attended the dinner which was themed “A Dancing City”. More than HK$14.6 million was raised to support the University’s One Health initiative. This record donation will be used to set up scholarships, fund pioneering research, and enhance teaching and research facilities.

This year we were delighted to welcome four "heavyweights" as honorary graduates: Professor Alain Aspect, Dr Herman Hu, Dr the Honourable Lee Shau-kee and Professor Cédric Villani. Each one has had a profound impact on society, inspiring others through their work and giving back to the world by helping to nurture young talent. Their presence at CityU will serve as a huge boost as we go forward.

CityU is committed to promoting intellectual and knowledge exchange. We take pride to have been the first university in Hong Kong and in the Greater China region to host the 35th World Cultural Council Award Ceremony. The 2018 Albert Einstein World Award of Science and the 2018 José Vasconcelos World Award of Education were granted to Professor Jean-Pierre Changeux of France and Professor Malik Mâaza of South Africa, respectively, at CityU on 8 November. Also, nine young CityU scholars received special recognition at the same ceremony for their outstanding research achievements.

As a forward-looking institution, we believe that learning should know no boundaries, which is why we are collaborating with National Palace Museum in Taipei on the “ANiMAL: Art Science Nature Society” show at CityU Exhibition Gallery. This major display features animals from different historical eras, bringing a fascinating blend of the old and the new, and traditional art and hi-tech creative media. In addition, One Health research from CityU’s Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences was seen at the exhibition, highlighting the growing threat that climate change, environmental degradation, disease transmission and other dangers pose to life on Earth. Seize the chance to visit this unique exhibition before it ends on 20 January. The venue is 18/F, Lau Ming Wai Academic Building.

Before you make a resolution for the new year, check out the CityU Alumni Story Series published by the Alumni Relations Office. The publication features interviews with over 40 alumni reflecting on how their CityU experience has contributed to their career development and personal achievements. We are grateful for the generous alumni donations that contributed to this publication. Proceeds will be used to support University development.

May the festive season bring you good health, happiness, and a very prosperous 2019!
