Dear alumni,

The new academic year got off to a flying start with news that the University Grants Committee (UGC) had recommended supporting the 6-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) as a publicly funded programme commencing at the start of the 2019 triennium. It is the first 6-year BVM programme in Asia designed to meet strenuous international accreditation standards.

Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of Hong Kong, added icing to the cake when she said at the naming ceremony for the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences on 20 August that our veterinary medicine programme was timely and that the government would be happy to endorse the UGC’s recommendation.

In addition, the CityU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, one of the most comprehensive and advanced veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Asia, was officially launched on 10 July. The lab provides a full range of diagnostic services to the veterinary community of Hong Kong and the region, including training and research, to further realize CityU’s promotion of One Health.

Another recent milestone was the launch of the unique School of Data Science (SDSC) and the Hong Kong Institute for Data Science. At present, there is no freestanding academic unit such as SDSC in Hong Kong. These initiatives will position CityU as a hub for excellence in data science education and research to respond to the increasing demand for data scientists and engineers to spur Hong Kong’s societal and economic developments.

Adding to these is the good news that we will confer honorary fellowships on three distinguished individuals on 9 October in recognition of their significant contributions to the development of, and service to, the University and the community. The awardees are Mr Harry S. Banga, Miss Tong Hing-min and Mr Wong Chun-hong, BBS.

I am delighted to learn that the Department of Computer Science and TFI Digital Media Limited have established a joint research centre: the TFI Applied Research Centre for Advanced Digital Media Technology. Thanks to a generous donation from alumnus Mr Wilson Yuen, Founder and CEO of TFI Digital Media Limited, the centre offers a platform for professionals to engage in technology research with a high potential for commercial success in the digital media sector.

Running a university is like running a marathon: it calls for discipline, persistence and resilience. To further promote the marathon spirit and a healthy lifestyle, I led a CityU delegation comprising top student, staff and alumni runners at the 2018 Helsinki Marathon in Finland on 25 August. The delegation was jointly organised by the Alumni Relations Office, Student Development Services and the CityU Marathon Club. The generosity of alumni and donors made the participation possible.

Staying with sports, my sincere congratulations go to those CityU members who were among the Hong Kong delegation at the recent Asian Games in Indonesia. Kudos to the medallists! Ho Tze-lok, a current student, won gold in the women’s team squash; while alumni Mr Yip Tsz-fung won silver in the men’s team squash, Ms Grace Lau Mo-sheung won bronze in the women’s kata, and Ms Charmian Koo Hor-yung and Ms Helen Yeung Hoi-ning won silver in the supermixed team contract bridge competition.

These athletes demonstrate the can-do spirit that CityU strives to inspire!

Lastly, I would like to wish all our alumni and their families an enjoyable Mid-Autumn Festival!
