"From the President's Desk" - June issue
13 June 2011

 June 2011  •  No. 1

Dear alumni,

I have decided to launch this newsletter to regularly update the University community on issues, operations, and developments that affect us all. CityU is a big family. We are currently undergoing a major transformation in the lead-up to the launch of the new 4-year degree programme. This newsletter will help to communicate new ideas and address matters of common concern to the community members.

I would like to begin by sharing some exciting news. Our 2010 Graduate Exit Survey conducted by Taylor Nelson Sofres showed that generally our students were satisfied with their learning experience at CityU; and a continuous improvement in the quality of student intake was observed. The employment rate of our 2010 bachelor’s degree graduates was 98.8%. Their average income was 12% higher than that received by the 2009 graduates. I am very grateful to all our teachers and staff members who have contributed to the learning and personal development of our students.

I am also very proud of the recent run of student success stories. Our law students have notched a series of outstanding performances in international mooting competitions, and our Putonghua debating team proved to be the best among Hong Kong’s university teams. In addition, in the competitions organized by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China, our sports teams once again won the overall championship title for the 4th consecutive year in both the men’s and women’s divisions, a record 6th grand slam in all. We are impressed by our athletes’ immense hard work, long hours of training, high team spirit and sheer determination. Our sports teams are an inspiration to us all.

We should continue to do our best for our students. The record-breaking donation of HK$215M raised by the University will enable us to fund more internships and exchanges, and further enhance our teaching, learning and research activities. Let me once again thank those of you who have been supporting us with your generous donations and helping us to build a caring culture on campus.

Indeed CityU has performed very strongly as a university, sustaining the momentum and proving that we are moving in the right direction in terms of achieving excellence in professional education and problem-driven research. The latest QS rankings have again put us among the top universities in Asia. Rankings are one important indication of achievement and development. They provide us with the impetus to contribute further to higher education in Hong Kong.

Until next time, best wishes!
