Deanship of the School of Veterinary Medicine

Dear Alumni,

I am pleased to report that City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is in the process of conducting a global search for a Founding Dean to lead forward the rapid development of the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) into a world-class centre of excellence in the region in collaboration with Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

We are highly confident that we will be able to recruit a distinguished scholar with the relevant administrative experience to benefit the SVM and CityU. The search will be conducted in collaboration with Cornell University, and it is expected that the successful candidate will be jointly appointed at both institutions.

The SVM will focus initially on research and postgraduate studies in Veterinary Medicine in alignment with the recommendations of the recent UGC Task Force report on the SVM. This initiative follows CityU Council’s approval on 13 October 2011, and the University Senate’s unanimous endorsement on 14 January 2014 for establishing the SVM. The first cohort of PhD students will be admitted in September 2014.

Professor Lu Jian, Vice-President (Research &Technology) and Dean of Graduate Studies, has been appointed as Acting Dean of the SVM with effect from 14 March 2014, pending the recruitment of the Founding Dean.

Professor Lu, an Academician of the National Academy of Technologies of France, is renowned for his scholastic achievements in surface engineering and nanotechnology. His research has led to the significant enhancement of the biocompatibility and mechanical properties of biomaterials. In addition, he has extensive high-level administrative experience, having served as Department Head in various higher education institutions in Europe and in Hong Kong, and as CityU’s Dean of the College of Science and Engineering between 2010 and 2013. He is also a core member of the University’s planning team for the SVM.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the support that you have given to the SVM as we pursue our vision to build a centre of excellence under the “One Health” paradigm to promote sustainable development for society and expand educational opportunities in critical areas of biomedical sciences for our students.

各位校友：

我很高興地向大家報告，香港城市大學（城大）正在全球範圍內招聘動物醫學院創院院長，以求在他／她的領導下以及康奈爾大學獸醫學院的合作支持下，快速將動物醫學院建設成為本地區世界一流的傑出動物醫學中心。

我們深信定能招聘到一位具相關行政經驗的傑出學者為動物醫學院及城大服務。延聘合適人選的工作將與康奈爾大學合作進行，獲選者將為兩所大學同時聘用。

按照大學教育資助委員會工作小組報告的提議，動物醫學院前期將以研究及研究生教學為主。建立動物醫學院的計劃曾於2011年10月13日獲得城大校董會批准，並於2014年1月14日獲得大學教務會一致同意。第一批博士研究生將於2014年9月入學。

副校長（研究及科技）及研究生院院長呂堅教授獲任命為動物醫學院代理院長，任職日期從2014年3月14日起，直到新聘創院院長上任為止。

呂教授是法國國家技術科學院院士，在表面工程及納米技術領域成績卓著，享有盛譽。他的研究顯著提高了對生物適應性及生物材料的機械特性方面的理解。此外，他具有廣泛的高層行政管理經驗，曾擔任歐洲及香港多所高等學校的系主任，並在2010至2013年間擔任城大科學及工程學院院長。他亦是城大動物醫學院籌備團隊的核心成員。
