Dear Colleagues and Alumni,

We are delighted that CityU has been ranked 5th in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) survey of the world’s top 50 universities under 50 years of age. The survey results also indicate that standards are rising all over the world, and that competition among institutions of higher education is becoming more intense than ever before.

CityU has been enhancing its capacity to compete and to seek new funding sources. One of our recent initiatives has been to develop a partnership with the Shuangliu Government in Chengdu, Sichuan, to establish the City University of Hong Kong Chengdu Research Institute (CityU Chengdu Research Institute) later this fall.

The prosperous county of Shuangliu is poised to develop into a technology hub in the western China region. Under the agreement, the Shuangliu Government will provide annual funding and a significant piece of land, with a ready-to-use building, for CityU to use. The funding and land will support the operation and research activities of the institute for the first five years, after which there will be further negotiations.

This collaboration is an important strategic development for CityU in western China, complementing the CityU Shenzhen Research Institute in the southern region. Together, these two initiatives will significantly augment our ability to bid for research funds on the mainland at both the national and provincial levels. In addition, they will further promote CityU’s presence and impact in the mainland, contribute to knowledge transfer, and enable us to recruit high-quality students for our academic programmes. I would like to thank the Office of Vice-President (Research & Technology) for this timely initiative in Chengdu.

Competition presents us with opportunities for innovation, propelling us forward. Collegiality nourishes our talent for creativity, enabling us to see ourselves as part of a larger whole. It is one of the core values in CityU’s code of conduct, and I believe it is an essential condition for creative intellectual life to thrive.

People do not create alone. We work within traditions and relationships of cooperation, trust and reciprocity. To enable us to meet the challenges in global higher education today, we must continue to strengthen synergy and collegiality on campus.

Thank you and have a great summer! The next issue of the newsletter will be published in September.
