Dear Colleagues and Alumni,

CityU has performed very strongly in the 2013 QS World University Rankings by Subject. The University featured in the world’s Top 200 institutions in 18 of the 30 subjects covered by this year’s survey, which evaluated 2,858 universities worldwide. CityU had 13 subject areas ranked in the Top 100, seven of which were in the Top 50. This is a highly commendable achievement.

We are also delighted with our graduates’ achievements. According to the 2012–13 Graduate Exit Survey, the employment rate of our graduates is close to 99%. This means that employers are increasingly recognising the quality of our graduates. In addition, CityU more than doubled its score in the QS World University Rankings for 2012 in the area of employer ranking compared with the previous year. Meanwhile our graduates’ success rate in securing employment with multinational corporations, including the Big Four accounting firms, and with the civil service has also increased significantly.

We thank CityU Council’s Advisory Committee for Graduate Employment and the Career and Internship Office for these successes. We owe a debt of gratitude to our dedicated alumni for the intensive mentoring, career advising and vigorous training for job interview that they provide for our graduates.

To further enhance student learning and development, the University has put in place two new mechanisms to support the implementation of our Discovery-enriched Curriculum (DEC). The first one, the Communities of Practice, is a platform to allow scholars to share their experience and learn from one another. Five Communities of Practice, involving several dozen staff from different disciplines across the campus, have been organised so far. The themes include Discovery and Innovation, General Education, Social Responsibility and Ethics, Sustainability, and Technology and Creativity.

The second mechanism, the Ideas Incubator Scheme, provides resources and a venue for individuals or teams of staff and students to develop creative and innovative ideas, and to promote knowledge transfer. Eighteen projects have been approved for funding so far by the University. They range from ideas for “Enabling Low Carbon Living in Shek Kip Mei Estate” and “Discovery and Innovation through Experiments in Public Policy” to creating the “CityU Apps Lab” and a “Laboratory for Ubiquitous Musical Expression”.

The intellectual bonding and impetus for promoting discovery and innovation that these projects create distinguish CityU as a global destination for professional education.

We thank the Provost’s Office and all the project team members for their enthusiasm and contributions. Please join us in working to promote student success and to support our collective pursuit of excellence.
