Exciting news as new semester starts: CityU breaks into top 100 universities in QS world rankings

Dear colleagues, students and alumni,

The new semester at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has started well, and I am delighted with the exciting progress that the University is making.

Several strategic initiatives in support of our professional education and problem-driven research have now been fully implemented, signaling the start of a new era at CityU. All of our programmes include an element of discovery and innovation, empowering our students to think creatively and critically, and preparing them for the challenge of the workplace of tomorrow.

We are proud that Professor Liu Zhi-Qiang from the School of Creative Media was one of three distinguished recipients from the eight local tertiary institutions to receive the prestigious University Grants Committee 2012 Award for Teaching Excellence. We are very impressed by his dedication and exemplary teaching.     

It is equally exciting to learn that we performed strongly in the latest funding exercise conducted by the Research Grants Council with grants totaling $71.9 million for 119 research projects. Moreover, CityU has won the largest number of awards in the Early Career Scheme among all tertiary institutions, a strong indication of the outstanding potential of our young faculty.

To cap it all, CityU has performed very well in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings released on 11 September. We have risen 15 places to 95th, a remarkable achievement. I am very pleased with the efforts that the University is making to raise the standards of teaching and research for the benefit of our students and society.

I have great hopes for our University. We have a highly talented team of faculty and staff who are committed to our academic mission and to aligning research and teaching with our responsibilities for educating the next generation of young professionals.

教研合一：城大躋身全球最佳百大

各位同事、同學、校友：

歡迎334新學年順利開始，並帶來連串令人振奮的好消息。

城大實施其「五年策略性發展計劃」（2010–2015），推行專業教育及問題導向研究，激勵學生發揮創意、獨立思考，為未來社會和工作上的挑戰作好充份準備。

上週末，創意媒體學院劉志強教授獲大學教育資助委員會頒予傑出教學獎，成為本地八所大學的三位得獎者之一。劉教授為教學竭誠盡心，堪稱楷模，值得師生同賀。

再者，研究資助局公佈的資助計劃撥款結果顯示城大表現優秀，共有119項研究計劃獲得資助，總金額達7,190萬港元。城大循「傑出青年學者計劃」申請而獲得資助的研究項目數量更為各大院校之冠，反映了我們青年學者的卓越潛質。

此外，9月11日Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 發表的世界大學排名中城大跳躍15位，晉升為世界第95。創此佳績，實有賴於大學不斷提升教學與研究水準，支持學生和社會發展。

最重要的是，城大優秀出眾的教研團隊致力實踐學術理想，把教學和研究相結合，並以培育新一代的年輕專才為己任。
