Dear colleagues, students and alumni,

We would like to express our condolences to the family of Sir John Swaine, the former President of the Legislative Council (LegCo) and an Honorary Graduate of City University of Hong Kong (CityU), who passed away on 7 August.

Sir John was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws in November 1993 by the University, and we have been very proud to include him as part of the CityU family. He was always deeply respected for his wisdom and dedication.

A barrister by training, Sir John proved to be a great friend to CityU during its formative years, and he enjoyed a long and distinguished career serving the people of Hong Kong. He was LegCo President from 1993 to 1995, having first joined LegCo in 1980.

Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
