New initiatives further enhance student learning

Dear colleagues and students,

I am pleased to announce that the University is introducing a number of exciting new initiatives to enhance the learning experience of our students in alignment with the University's Strategic Plan. I appeal to all units to assist with their successful implementation. The University has set a target of raising HK$50 million in private donations to provide additional support to CityU students for three specific programmes: overseas exchanges, overseas internships, and bursaries. So far, the University has secured HK$25 million. A Task Force chaired by Vice-President (Student Affairs) has conducted a review of the On-campus Service-learning Scheme (OSS) with a view to enriching students' work-based learning experience on campus. The outcome of the review is that the Task Force has recommended the introduction of two new schemes, namely the Campus Internship Scheme (CIS) and the Campus Work Scheme (CWS), for implementation on 1 July 2012 to replace the current OSS. Students who participate in these schemes will receive an hourly stipend of HK$52. These two new schemes are designed to enhance the quality and raise the effectiveness of our campus work-based learning for students. We are also working hard to improve the social space for student activities and out-of-class learning. The University has set aside over 10,000 square feet of quality space in Academic 2 (level 3) for this purpose, including an area for a student lounge, a dance studio, and a suite of practice rooms which will be ready for use in early 2012. Student success is our success. I wish to thank all our donors and colleagues for generously contributing their time, energy and resources to making these initiatives work, and we look forward to receiving your ideas and support to enhance the all-round development of our students.

All the best,

Way Kuo President and University Distinguished Professor
