To : Council members, staff, students and the Convocation
Dear all,
Invitation for nominations to the Council and the Court for consideration by Council’s Nominations Committee
In August 2007, the Council established the Nominations Committee, which is responsible for making recommendations to the Chief Executive of HKSAR (CE) who is also the Chancellor of the University, for the appointment of lay Council members when vacancies arise under the category of membership which covers lay members appointed by the CE on the recommendation of the Council (clause 10(1)(f)(i) of the CityU Ordinance). The Nominations Committee is also delegated with the authority to recommend nominees to be appointed to the Court by the CE and to decide the nominees to be appointed under the category of Court membership determined by the Council (clauses 2(e) & (f) of the CityU Statute 5). Decisions of the Committee are final and cannot be appealed.
The Council, as the supreme governing body of the University has been providing input and guidance to the University in performing its role in the Higher Education system of Hong Kong. The Court which was established since 2007 is the supreme advisory body of the University. The Court enables the University to involve more members of the wider community in understanding, promoting and helping with the development of the University, including assistance in fundraising efforts to support various initiatives and activities. Further information on the Council and the Court can be obtained at the respective websites at http://www.cityu.edu.hk/cuc and http://www.cityu.edu.hk/court.
Since there will be vacancies by the end of this year in the categories of Council and Court membership mentioned above, I am writing, on behalf of the Nominations Committee, to invite you to submit names for consideration by the Nominations Committee. You are invited to send names in strict confidence to the Council Secretariat by e-mail at cuc@cityu.edu.hk on or before 23rd August 2013 for preparation of the respective lists for consideration by the Nominations Committee. In your submission, please indicate clearly whether the person(s) is (are) proposed for the Council or the Court and it would facilitate the Committee’s deliberation if a brief profile/ list of achievements of the persons concerned can be provided if this is available.
It is important to note that those submitting names for the Nominations Committee’s consideration should not approach the nominees concerned.
Dr. Kevin Downing
Secretary to the Council’s Nominations Committee
